CSN faculty member Christy Haynes (University of Minnesota) was named a finalist in the Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists competition. She is one of 10 chemists being considered for the award; the final announcement will be made after a science symposium and gala in September 2017. CSN graduate student Alicia McGeachy (Geiger group) was featured by the Northwestern Graduate School in an article entitled “Alicia McGeachy: Finding Balance between Science and Outreach,” which emphasizes how outreach work complements the more traditional components of scientific doctoral training. CSN faculty member Rigoberto Hernandez was formally installed as the first Gompf Family Professor at Johns Hopkins at a ceremony on June 8th. Friends of the family were on hand to celebrate the lives of Thomas and Elaine Gompf. Rigoberto’s work was also featured in a JHU press release and Youtube video.
CSN graduate student Xu (Mary) Huang recently defended her doctoral dissertation at the University of Iowa, “Extending Accurate Density Functional Modeling for the Study of Interface Reactivity and Environmental Applications.” Congratulations, Dr. Huang!
CSN Graduate Student Donald White was selected as the winner of the 2nd Place Award in the graduate poster competition at Tuskegee University’s Seventh Joint Annual Research Symposium (JARS 2017). The poster was entitled, “A facile method dispersing CNF’s via vs1 with in a polymer matrix.” Congratulations, Donald!
Kyle Johnson and Katie Landy, CSN undergraduates working in the lab of Dr. Christy Haynes, have both been chosen to receive the University of Minnesota’s 2017 David A. and Merece H. Johnson Scholarship for outstanding achievement in undergraduate research as well as overall scholastic excellence. Congratulations to Kyle and Katie!
The Humboldt Foundation has awarded CSN faculty member Franz Geiger the 2017 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Prize, which is named after the famous 18th century mathematician and astronomer. The award allows Franz to work on interfacial charge density problems relevant to the CSN. Congratulations, Franz!
