The University of Minnesota has published a press release describing the recent CSN article, “Chronic exposure to complex metal oxide nanoparticles elicits rapid resistance in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.” The study, co-authored by graduate student Stephanie Mitchell, Professor Erin Carlson, and twelve other researchers across four groups in the Center, was published in August in the journal Chemical Science. The story has been picked up by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Phys.org, Newswise, and the National Science Foundation website.

Professor Christy Haynes was recognized in The Analytical Scientist Power List 2019 Top 100, “showcasing the tremendous range of talent, ingenuity and leadership present across all corners of analytical science on a global scale.” See Christy’s online bio here.

Dr. Ali Rahnamoun (Hernandez group, Johns Hopkins University) will be joining Michigan State as a Research Scientist.  Congratulations Ali!

Congratulations to Dr. Bo Zhi (Haynes group) for successfully defending his PhD thesis, entitledGroup IV Element-based Luminescent Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Environmental Impact Evaluation, and Bio-imaging Applications” on August 16. Shortly, Bo will be departing for a position as a senior research scientist at Zeon in Japan.

Diamond Jones, a fourth-year graduate student in the Mason lab, was recently awarded a Graduate Diversity Fellowship from the Graduate College at the University of Iowa. Congratulations Diamond!

Congratulations to Tana O’Keefe (Haynes group) for being chosen as a trainee on the University of Minnesota Biotechnology Training Grant! As a trainee, Tana will have the opportunity to push the collaborative boundaries of her project and make new industrial connections.

Congratulations to Dr. Emily Tollefson (Carlson group), who accepted a faculty position at the University of Puget Sound!

Congratulations to Dr. Gene Chong (Hernandez group) for successfully defending his PhD thesis, entitled “Bottom-up simulations reveal mechanisms of nanoparticle surface layering and corona formation,” on June 12!  Gene will be joining Prof. Alex MacKerell’s group at the University of Maryland as a postdoc.

Two Haynes group undergraduate researchers were recognized by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota this Spring (see the news release for department awards here). Meghan Cahill (left) was awarded the 2019 Lloyd W. Goerke scholarship, which recognizes a junior chemistry majors who has shown outstanding academic achievement. Elaine Kappel (right) was chosen for the 2019 Robert C. Brasted Memorial Fellowship, which is awarded to a junior who has expressed an interest in a teaching career in chemistry. Additionally, both Meghan and Elaine were among 10 chemistry students who received Summer Research Fellowships. Congratulations Meghan and Elaine!
