The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee received a $10 million donation for a new research vessel for the School of Freshwater Sciences. CSN faculty member Rebecca Klaper is the director of the School. The donation toward this new research vessel is a major step toward the construction of a ship that will expand UWM’s research capabilities on the Great Lakes and provide students more opportunities for onboard study. The certificate recognizes a significant commitment, effort, and achievement toward developing teaching knowledge and skills (full description here). Only about 100 certificates have ever been awarded!
Letters & Science Magazine, a publication of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s College of Letters & Science, has featured CSN research in its Fall 2019 issue. The article “Small Wonders,” by Aaron R. Conklin, discusses recent work in the lab of Director Bob Hamers studying copper phosphate nanoflakes, their use in agricultural applications, and the ability to control the size, shape, and composition of nanomatierals. Dr. Donald White (Curry group) successfully defended his thesis, titled “Synthesis, characterization, and application of cellulose nanofibrils for fabrication and biodegradable biobased materials.” Donald will be moving to Houston for a position at Occidental Petroleum. Congrats Donald!
The University of Minnesota has published a press release describing the recent CSN article, “Chronic exposure to complex metal oxide nanoparticles elicits rapid resistance in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1.” The study, co-authored by graduate student Stephanie Mitchell, Professor Erin Carlson, and twelve other researchers across four groups in the Center, was published in August in the journal Chemical Science. The story has been picked up by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Phys.org, Newswise, and the National Science Foundation website.
